Toronto,
ONThe most common methods of measuring wound surface
area overestimate the size of the wound.
Researchers David Keast, MSc, MD, clinical adjunct professor of
family medicine, University of Western Ontario, and G. Cranney,
PhD, Group Research, Smith & Nephew, York, U.K., presented their
finding in a poster at the annual meeting of the Canadian Association
of Wound Care.
Rectangular measurements overestimate the wound surface by a mean
of 44 per cent and elliptical measurements overestimate the wound
surface by a mean of 13 per cent, they reported.
While rectangular and elliptical measurements are more accurate
for smaller ulcers, they are progressively less accurate for larger
ulcers.
The investigators conducted a retrospective study of 12,181 observations
of 2,131 patients with 2,768 wounds. All etiologies were included.
True area was calculated by an imaging system using a perimeter-based
algorithm.
